THREE RED CARDS AS MEXICO BEAT SOUTH AFRICA IN FIFA 2026 WORLD CUP OPENER

Julian Quiñones’ strike in the 9th minute and Raul Jiménez header in the 67th was all Mexico needed to beat South Africa 2-0, in the opening match of the FIFA 2026 World Cup on Thursday.

The Group A match played at the Mexico City stadium, Mexico City, saw South Africa’s Yaya Sithole and Themba Swane sent off in the second half. Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio also handed one red card to Mexico’s Ceasar Montes in the first minute of the added time after full play.

It is the first time ever an opening game will witness three red cards.

The world cup fixtures continues on Friday with South Korea playing Czechia in Group A, while actions start at the co-host city with Canada meeting Bosnia and Herzegovina in Group B.
